The flute has 6 holes. The third hole (from the top) is covered by a leather strip. If it remains covered, it can be played on the simpler pentatonic scale. If you figure it out, you can play up to a chromatic scale by following the fingering in the included book.

Until recently, most musical instruments were tuned so that the A note (of the middle octave of a piano) was tuned at 440 Hz (Hz = cycles per second). This was established as the standard in the early 1900s.

EarthTone flutes use a frequency of 432Hz for the note A and all other notes are tuned with reference to it. When played along with flutes tuned to the 440Hz frequency, the 432Hz tonal difference is very subtle. The 8Hz of tonal difference is apparently slight in degree, but can be noticeably different when we experience the sensation of the music we are listening to. Like the subtle inflection of the human voice that can project subtle variation in feelings, an instrument that uses a slight change in frequency can alter the feeling quality of the music being played.
