What is peculiar about the Peñaparda square drum is the way it is played with one hand on one side and a wooden baton on the other, which allows a wide interpretive possibility in terms of rhythms and showiness. With the mallet, the bass sounds are achieved when the head is struck, the highest sound hitting the frame with the mallet, and a medium sound by beating with the other hand directly on the skin.

If you play it with the drumstick on the side that has hair, they sound less harmonic (more defined sound), but the sound with the hand on the other side is still sharp.
