What is peculiar about the Peñaparda square drum is the way it is played with one hand on one side and a wooden baton on the other, which allows a wide interpretive possibility in terms of rhythms and showiness. With the mallet, the bass sounds are achieved when the head is struck, the highest sound hitting the frame with the mallet, and a medium sound by beating with the other hand directly on the skin. >

Starting from this original instrument, Hokema has placed the kalimba suspended from a membrane that has the effect of extend the duration of the sound and amplifying the sound in a natural way. By zooming in and out of the bottom of the Sansula to a solid surface, a curious wa-wa effect can be produced. The Renaissance model differs from the basic model in that the membrane is made with a super resistant membrane from the Remo brand, which is usually used as a percussion instrument head, maintaining the loudness practically 100% compared to the basic model.
