What is peculiar about the Peñaparda square drum is the way it is played with one hand on one side and a wooden baton on the other, which allows a wide interpretive possibility in terms of rhythms and showiness.
With the mallet, the bass sounds are achieved when the head is struck, the highest sound hitting the frame with the mallet, and a medium sound by beating with the other hand directly on the skin.
